Understanding the CELPIP Reading Format

Four parts, one sitting

CELPIP Reading has 4 parts, each with multiple tasks. The total is approximately 55–60 questions across 55–60 minutes. This means roughly one question per minute — there is no time to read slowly.

The core challenge: The passages are genuinely dense and the questions are specific. Most CLB 6–7 candidates fail not because they don't understand the words — but because they don't know where to look for the answers efficiently.

---

Skim first, read to answer

This is the most important strategy shift for Reading improvement. Most candidates read the whole passage first, then look at the questions. This wastes time and doesn't help — they've read everything but remembered nothing specific.

Better approach:

1. Read the first sentence of each paragraph (30 seconds) to map the passage
2. Read the first question
3. Return to the passage and find the relevant paragraph — read only that section
4. Answer from evidence, not memory

This approach is faster and more accurate.

Part 2 is different from the others: Visual-text matching

Part 2 gives you a piece of text and a visual — a schedule, a diagram, a price list, a map — and asks you to apply information from one to the other.

Key strategy for Part 2:

• Read the questions first (they tell you what to match)
• Don't read every word of both the text and the visual — find the specific row/column/section the question is pointing to
• Watch for detail precision: "Thursday" vs "Friday," "$45" vs "$54," "morning" vs "afternoon" — these distinctions are what Part 2 questions test

The inference question

Parts 3 and 4 frequently include inference questions — questions where the answer is not stated directly in the text but can be reasoned from what is stated.

Example: Text: "The programme was discontinued after two consecutive years of declining enrolment." Question: "What can be inferred about the programme's funding situation?" Correct answer: "Its funding was likely reduced or eliminated due to low demand." (This is a reasonable inference — the text doesn't say funding was cut, but declining enrolment almost always leads to funding cuts for discretionary programmes.)

How to spot inference questions: They use phrases like "What can be inferred," "What does the author suggest," "What is implied," "Based on the passage, which statement is most likely true."

How to answer them correctly: The correct answer for an inference question must be supportable by something specifically stated in the passage. If you can't point to the sentence or phrase that makes the inference reasonable, the option is probably a trap.
