CELPIP Speaking Task 8 — Describing an Unusual Situation Template

What this task asks

You see an image depicting an unusual, unexpected, or out-of-the-ordinary scenario. You describe what is unusual about it, how you would feel or react, and what you think might have led to this situation. 30 seconds to prepare, 60 seconds to speak.

The Unusual Situation Structure

Describe what's unusual (15–20 seconds)

Don't just say "this is weird." Describe specifically what element is unexpected and why.

"What strikes me immediately about this image is the contrast between the two subjects. There's a person in formal business attire — full suit and tie — sitting in what appears to be a muddy farm field, apparently working on a laptop. The formal clothing and the rural setting are so incongruous that it immediately draws the eye."

Speculate on how this came to be (20–25 seconds)

Use hedged language to speculate. You don't need to know — reasonable guesses are fine.

"My best guess is that this person has had an extremely hectic day that involved an unexpected detour. Perhaps they had a business meeting, then had to deal with some kind of family emergency or property issue on a farm — and found themselves needing to continue working remotely from wherever they happened to be. There's also a possibility this was intentional — a remote worker who simply chose an unconventional office for the day."

How you would react if you were there (10–15 seconds)

"If I encountered this scene in person, my immediate reaction would probably be amused curiosity. I'd want to ask whether they needed anything — perhaps a table or a power source — and I imagine the story behind it would be fascinating."

Reflection or observation (10 seconds)

"It's actually a good reminder that the boundaries between work and the rest of life have become remarkably fluid in recent years. This image captures that transition in an unusually literal way."

Describing what's unusual:
