How is CLB Calculated from CELPIP Scores?
The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) is a scale from 1 to 12 used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to measure English language proficiency. For the CELPIP Listening and Reading sections, your raw score (number of correct answers out of 38) is mapped to a CLB level using an official conversion table. For Speaking and Writing, each section is assessed across four criteria rated from 3 to 12, and the average of those four scores determines your CLB level for that skill. Our calculator automates this conversion instantly. Check if your CLB meets immigration pathway requirements →
Why CLB 9 Matters for Express Entry
In the Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), reaching CLB 9 in all four skills is a major threshold: it unlocks 31 CRS points per skill (124 total) versus just 17 points per skill (68 total) at CLB 7. That difference of 56 points can be decisive in competitive draw rounds, where cut-off scores often fall between 480 and 550. For the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW), CLB 7 is the minimum in all four skills, making CLB 9 a strong competitive advantage. Read our full Express Entry CLB guide →
